Despite some progress in synthesising background information for marine invertebrate taxa, a comprehensive review of the literature and a thorough evaluation of potential traits is yet to be undertaken. To provide access to a ‘wet’ synthesis of the biology of 1,025 taxa (recorded at the genus level and above) originating from Cefas, the authors have compiled a database of the basic biology of marine invertebrates. The transcriptome of 1,024 taxa was searched for homologies in four representative phyla (Acartia, Mytilus, Ophiostoma, and Tubastraea), proposing a set of biological traits to catalogue the biological aspects of benthic taxa. Various resources were examined (including peer-reviewed literature, online databases) for ease of access and their content was evaluated. To establish the taxonomic coverage of each resource, information was collated and recorded by taxonomically relevant category.
Invertebrate zoology is a major field of zoology that is devoted to the study of invertebrate animals, such as corals, jellyfish, molluscs, echinoderms, annelids, and arthropods. By invertebrate zoology is slightly different to other zoological disciplines, such as those involved with vertebrate animals. Invertebrate zoology is therefore considered, along with other marine disciplines, a sub-field of zoology. Invertebrate zoology closely links the field of invertebrate biology with the study of several biological characteristics of invertebrates and the study of invertebrate zoology and the study of species diversity, and their dynamics. 7211a4ac4a
